On days when our own service provided challenges, we were provided with the instruction that we could use any non-public facing platform (HHS, 2020). At the beginning, we sometimes relied on outside services as we expanded our own capabilities. We had an in-house platform that grew from being wonky and slow to being a fairly reliable network. I was hoping that I would find a fabulous guide that would make this very easy, but I don’t think most people are thinking of telehealth services in this way yet.

So, thinking about how to write about this requires a bit of deconstruction. As a result, something that was viewed with a bit of skepticism and caution has now become as normal as tying our shoes. COVID lockdown forced many of us, myself included, to integrate video skills, software, and equipment into our lives quickly and organically. The technicians used an e-stethoscope that allowed the cardiologist to hear a patient’s lungs. At the Nigeria oilfield, technicians connected with a cardiologist located in Nevada, who was provided by Barton Associates. Using the kit, residents of the small village of Junke were able to teleconference with physicians at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, which is 40 minutes away. VSee has used the telemedicine kit in several humanitarian missions, including a recent trip to Gabon. The medical devices integrate with a small computer screen that facilitates a video conference link with a physician in a different location. VSee’s telemedicine kit is a lightweight, waterproof, and durable briefcase that houses a variety of medical devices including otoscopes and dermascopes. Recently, the company tested the possibility of using the VSee telemedicine kit to deliver telehealth services to employees working at the Shell Nigeria Bonga Field. Shell, a longtime user of VSee, uses video conferencing to connect with oil facilities located in remote and sometimes harsh environments.

Barton Associates partnered with VSee, a video conferencing software company, to test the use of the company’s telemedicine field kit in a Shell oilfield in Nigeria.
